Formation (1996–2002)
Lordi was formed in 1996 after Lordi (Tomi Putaansuu), Amen (Jussi Sydänmaa) and G-Stealer (Sami Keinänen) met each other in Stockholm, where they had gone to see Kiss perform. Inspired by Kiss, their vision was to perform with spectacular pyrotechnics and monster masks.In 1997 Enary (Erna Siikavirta) joined the band on keyboard.
In 1999, the group recorded their first album Bend Over And Pray The Lord. Tiainen, the owner of their record company, had originally planned to publish the album; however, the company did not have sufficient resources to market it. Tiainen recommended Lordi to the record label Kimmo Hirvonen's Records, owned by Anaconda. The album was never released because Anaconda Records went bankrupt shortly before the planned release date. The band never played a gig with the original line-up, though the band had been promised a record release gig in 1999. During the same year G-Stealer left the band because of work commitments and was replaced by Magnum (Sami Wolking), whom Mr. Lordi had met via Kiss Army Finland. In 2000, drummer Kita (Sampsa Astala) joined Lordi—the band had originally planned to use MIDI drum tracks instead of having a drummer.
Get Heavy (2002–2003)
After several failed attempts at obtaining a recording contract, Lordi signed a record deal with BMG Finland in 2002. In July, the band released their first single, "Would You Love A Monsterman?", which rose to number one and spawned a music video. During the summer the band went under the auspices of producer TT Oksala's Finnvox Studios to record their first album[1]. Debut recording ran into several problems.
In autumn, bassist Magnum left the band for personal reasons and was replaced by Niko Hurme. Though Lordi's debut album had already been recorded when Kalma joined, he appeared in the album art and the composition of the accounts. Their debut album Get Heavy was released in November, and covered the draft adapted from Kiss's Love Gun album. Adapted from the original draft was the Destroyer album[? clarification needed]. The album won the 2003 Emma award for best domestic hard rock or heavy metal album and Get Heavy has sold more than 67,000 copies and was certified platinum in Finland in 2003 and multi-platinum in 2006.
Lordi played their first gig on December 8, 2002, in Helsinki at the Nosturi Club. In 2003, Lordi appeared at several music events in Finland and abroad, especially in Germany, where they played as a part of the Wacken Road Show. During some of the Germany tour, Lordi had Nightwish play as their warm-up act. The tour allowed both bands to increase their popularity in Germany and helped them sign a recording contract with the German record company Drakkar. Nightwish had already achieved solid success of joint concerts in Germany and Lordi will raise the profile was also in Germany.
Popularity waning (2004–2005)
At the turn of 2003-2004, Lordi began recording the next studio album. This time the album was produced Hiili Hiilesmaa with which the band got along well. Published by Lordi, 14 April 2004 second album, The Monsterican Dream whose best-known songs are released on single "My Heaven Is Your Hell" and "Blood Red Sandman". The time of the appearance of the album the band costumes and mask were also made reforms. Special edition of the album, also released a DVD containing the band's own short film, The Kin (2004). In the film the band members were the true side roles. The film, despite the disc is the band's success so far, the worst. In 2006, The Monsterican Dream gold sales exceeded this limit, and the album has now sold about 33 000 copies. Platinum album crossed the border in 2007.
In February 2005, was released by Sanctuary Records, The Monster Show, a compilation album. Sanctuary had originally been intended to take to market a collection of records in the United States, but because of financial problems in the United States is not published. Sanctuary, however, published a compilation album in the UK. In Finland, a collection published by Sony BMG disc.
The idea of The Monster Show-disc collection began in spring 2004 Lordi The Monsterican Dream album release time. Tomi Putaansuu held in Stockholm to interview the band Kiss, Gene Simmons Inferno magazine. At the same time he donated Simmons Lordi's debut album, Get Heavy (2002). Later, Simmons Assistant, announced that he would publish the Lordi's own record label album in the U.S., but if the band would like to share sales revenue for self, it would be better to publish a Kiss record label, Sanctuary Records, and transit. Sanctuary did not want to publish either of the studio albums individually, but a compilation of the best albums of songs. Get Heavy and The Monsterican Dream of the best songs consolidated to a compilation album The Monster Show. Collection of Lordi did in the spring of 2005 by the European Monstour tour in Europe, during which the internal atmosphere of the band increased in intensity and led to a dispute between members. After the tour the band drew a keyboard player, Enary
Later that year, bassist Kalma wanted to resign because of personal reasons. Kalman's motive, including his family and the band then the poor economic status. Tomi Putaansuu tried to Kalma get him to remain in the band suggested that he just playing the biggest tours and other gigs the band would be contracted to prime, which would be its own monster accessories. Death did not accede to Mr. Lordi's proposal because he wanted to be involved either in the band at full (which is not in his case was not possible owing to the then situation in life), or not at all. Death, however, played the bass units for the future The Arockalypse album. Kalma left the band just before the Lord came forward, the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest qualifier.
As new members joined the band, keyboardist Leena Peisa and bassist Samer el Nahhal. The composition of regeneration would also reformed the band's costumes. Eurovision Song Contest victory
Saturday 20 May 2006, Lordi made history by winning the Finnish representative of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Athens with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah". The song scored 292 points, which was an all-time points record until Alexander Rybak broke it in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with 387 points. Only three countries - Armenia, Albania and Monaco - did not give a single point to Finland. Eight countries gave Finland a full 12 points. Lordi was also a semi-final number one and even got 292 points, which was historic, as they were the first competitor to win both the semi final and the final. Pasi Rantanen from the band Thunderstone performed backing vocals for the performance, wearing a Gene Simmons Kiss mask.
The Arockalypse (2006-2008)
Lordi opened the fall of 2006 Bringing Back the Balls to Europe tour, which first concert DVD released in February 2007 Bringing Back the Balls to Stockholm 2006. The tour ended on a surprise, because the last gig in London, 31 October, the stage was also up in the former band's bassist, Niko Hurme.
In November 2006, Lordi was headlining MTV Europe Music Awards, in addition, Mr. Lordi divided the gala "Best Rock" award. Around the same time the band's manager, took the American Bill Aucoin, who is remembered among other things, Kiss, the original manager and was a key part of the Kiss, a breakthrough in making the 1970s.
In spring 2007, wrote a short Lordi Bringing Back the Balls to Japan-tour in Japan and the Bringing Back the Balls to tour the Baltic countries on the Baltic States. In May, the band was involved in the Helsinki Eurovision song contest and opened the competitions by winning song "Hard Rock Hallelujah".
In early summer 2007 in Oulu was described by Lordi Dark Floors-horror film, which premiered on 8 February 2008. In July 2007, went to Lordi North American tour with The Ozzfest festival tour with.
Ozzfest tour at the end of August at the end, Lordi was a short break. In September, announced that the band would go on 12 October 2007 a new tour in the USA warm-Type O Negative. The tour ended on 31 October 2007. During the tour, the band's tour staff was subjected to violence, as the band's tour manager Rikk Scholvinck and the security men tried to shoot a concert. U.S. shooters were criminals, but no one was injured. Shooters fled the scene with a stolen car before the police arrive. The end of the tour the band returned to Finland to record Dark Floors-horror movie theme song, which was also released as a single.
Deadache (2008–2009)
Lordi began recording their fourth album in the spring of 2008 and the album was released on 29 October 2008. The new album's release for the band reformed the monster suit. The album contained like its predecessors, melodic hard rock and heavy metal, but correspondingly more kauhutematiikkaa, as Lordi's previous discs. Confirmed in the name of the album Deadache and it is produced by Nino Laurenne. Prior to the completion of the disc revealed that it heard more piano solos, as its predecessor, and that the recital Missing Miss Charlene heard a child singing. The album's first single was called Bite It Like a Bulldog, and it was published on 3 September 2008.
Lordi has said before the appearance of the disc to be aware that Deadache will sell at least not in Finland, like its predecessor. "It goes without saying that the song contest edellislevyn distorted the situation, and this can not be sold in any case, the same number in Europe or, especially in Finland. We know that Finland is likely to disk stamped with the flop, even if it would sell double platinum, it does not sell 100 000 copies," Putaansuu Evening newspaper said in August 2008.
Deadache since the publication of Lordi made a tour of the United States in November in conjunction with Lizzy Borden. Lordi performed "Bite It Like A Bulldog" on the NBC show Late Night With Conan O'Brien on November 6, 2008.
Current situation (2009 -)
The first single from the forthcoming album is expected to be released in the spring of 2010 with a tentative release for the self-titled album sometime that fall. In September Putaansuu, spent a week in Los Angeles with Jeremy Rubolino and former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick writing two new tracks (Cut Off My Head and Call Off The Wedding). The forthcoming album is expected to be an even greater exposure to the 80's.
Michael Wagener will be the producer for Lordi's fifth album. Pre-production is currently underway and the actual recording session are scheduled to begin February 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
Band's music
Lordi's music is mostly hard rock, with some heavy metal music. The band's horror-related albums, members of the uniforms used by the monster and horror elements of the pallet containing the presence of the band's music also defined shock rock. Influences the band has received most of the pioneers from Kiss, in addition to which the band has been influenced by from Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister States.
Although the band is often perceived as a hard rock band, Lordi plays classic hard rock (for example, Kiss, Queen) heavier music, which makes Lordi is often defined as the metal band. Over the years, the band's musical style has become heavier direction. Debut album Get Heavy represented a large part of traditional hard rock music, but in 2004, published in The Monsterican Dream album the band had shifted considerably heavier music and horror effects were prominently displayed. The 2006 The Arockalypse Lordi relieved the burden a little music in the direction of hard rock album, and left almost all the effects from the horror. The next studio album, Deadache published on 29 October 2008 and it is The Arockalypse more horror elements. The forthcoming album is expected to be an even greater exposure to the 80's.
Costumes
The monster masks and costumes the band use are made of foam latex. Mr. Lordi's mask was first cast and was glued together piece by piece. The other masks are solid helmets. It takes the other band members about 20 minutes to put their masks on, but takes about 2 or 3 hours for Mr. Lordi. Mr. Lordi mentioned that their suits still have some original pieces from 1996. He has also said that the suits cost them "a few hundred euros".The band members do each others' makeup.
The monster costumes are such an integral part of Lordi's publicity image that they refuse to be photographed or even interviewed without them, even if in some cases it leads to their own discomfort. Lordi has done interviews without their masks but the interviews are always filmed from the back so that their faces are not visible. During interviews, Lordi speaks English to the cameras, not their native Finnish. In a brief segment on the BBC reporting about the band attending the Eurovision Song Contest 2006, they were shown lounging beside the pool in full sunlight, while wearing their costumes. During the segment, Lordi remarked that the costumes and the heat did not mix.
Lordi have stated that their costumes have been inspired by Kiss and the horror genre. Mr. Lordi himself has said that without Kiss, Lordi probably wouldn't exist. The costumes have also drawn comparisons to the thrash metal group GWAR, who wear similar foam latex monster outfits, even though their musical styles are quite different. Mr. Lordi has claimed in interviews that he had never heard of GWAR when he first formed Lordi. In a recent interview Oderus Urungus of GWAR called Lordi "a kiddie version of GWAR" but felt that Lordi didn't rip off GWAR, as both bands owed their image to earlier musicians such as Kiss. He seems to have a tongue-in-cheek rivalry with Mr. Lordi, as he has stated his desire to "remove Mr. Lordi's mask and expose him as a silly human".
Mr. Lordi's mask was auctioned for more than 6000 euros. It was bought by a Finnish businessman, Vesa Keskinen in an auction organised by YLE.Lordi's costume is currently in the historical costumes section in Turku Castle.
Unmasked by the media
Despite the band's strict approach in relation to their costumes, multiple newspapers have published photos of the band members without makeup. On 15 March 2006, the Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat published a photograph of Putaansuu (Mr. Lordi) in civilian clothing, with his face partially showing. Lordi has called this an insult toward them, and an attempt to destroy the "monster image" they have worked for ten years to create. On 22 May 2006, the Daily Mail published what was believed to be an old picture of the band without their makeup or masks. It was later revealed that the band in the photo was actually Children of Bodom, a different band altogether. This was acknowledged on Children of Bodom's official website. The photograph did feature Erna Siikavirta, who went on to join Lordi as Enary, the band's keyboard player. However, Enary left Lordi in 2005, well before their victory at Eurovision, replaced by Awa. On the same day, Bild-Zeitung, a German tabloid, published what they claimed was a photograph of Putaansuu without his mask in its section "Bild Uncovered" with the German headline "He is the Grand Prix Monster: All of Germany discusses the Ugliest Winners of all Time". Many other European tabloids and newspapers have published the same or similar photographs.
On 24 May 2006, the Finnish tabloid magazine 7 Päivää (Seven Days) published an old picture of Lordi's face on the front page, and two days later another tabloid, Katso! (Look!), published unmasked pictures of the other four band members.Both magazines were heavily criticised by their readers for publishing these pictures, which led to swift apologies from both magazines and promises not to publish unmasked pictures of Lordi anymore. On 26 May 2006, video footage was shown on television in Lithuania. It featured four men and one woman, dressed in black, sitting by the table at the airport in Athens. After a few seconds, Heikki Paasonen (the Eurovision Finnish commentator) in a black Lordi shirt came and stood in front of the camera, covering the view.
Show
Monster suits, pyrotechnics, and horror elements are important parts of Lordi's show. Lordi's pyrotechnics are inspired by Kiss, while the horror elements are largely derived from horror movies with some influence from Alice Cooper. Sometimes, Lordi's concerts use special props, such as Leatherface and Biomechanic Man masks. Their stage platform is also equipped with a zombie, dolls, and sometimes stage dancers. Mr. Lordi is also known to use a two-headed axe.
Lordi's current Scenery is designed by Weta Workshop of New Zealand. The workshop has also designed scenery for movies such as The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and 30 Days of Night.
Eurovision Song Contest 2006
Lordi represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 finals in Athens with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah" after getting through the semi-finals. The band won by a significant margin, scoring 292 points, 44 points over second placed Dima Bilan, representing Russia with the song "Never Let You Go".
Having been voted for by all countries except Albania, Armenia and Monaco, Lordi scored the highest number of points for any entry in any Eurovision Song Contest until the 2009 Contest. They received 12 points from eight countries: Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK. Coincidentally, Lordi also scored 292 points in the semi-final held two days earlier. They were also the first Eurovision entrant to win in both the Semi-Final and Final stages. Lordi were congratulated on their victory by both Finnish President Tarja Halonen and Prime Minister of Finland Matti Vanhanen.They opened the 2007 Eurovision contest.

Controversy
The choice of Lordi to represent Finland spawned some controversy in both Finland and Greece.
In Finland the choice was criticised by some and a group of religious leaders went as far as calling President Halonen to veto their entry.In Greece, a number of organisations were trying to stop Lordi from competing. The Greek restaurant and bar owners' union President, Mrs. Niki Constantinou made a public plea directed to the people of Finland and Greece not to allow Lordi to perform in the contest, claiming the group is Satanic. Three other organisations in Greece initiated legal action against Lordi.
Mr. Lordi himself responded to the accusations and strictly denied Satanism. He said a Satanist group would not write songs such as "Hard Rock Hallelujah" or "Devil Is A Loser".
Despite, or maybe because of,the controversy, Greece ended up awarding Lordi 12 points, the highest possible, in the contest final.
Concert in Helsinki
To celebrate their victory in the Eurovision Song Contest, Lordi held a public, free, open-air concert in the Market Square, Helsinki, Finland, on 26 May 2006. At the concert, President of Finland Tarja Halonen made an official appearance to give Lordi a bronze key flag award for exemplary Finnish work. The concert was reported to have been attended by over 90,000 people from all over Finland and even other countries, some even on their first ever trip to Helsinki.The concert was the biggest public event to that day in Helsinki. On this occasion, the world record for most people ever to sing karaoke was (successfully) attempted by approximately 80,000 people, singing Hard Rock Hallelujah. The previous record was held by 50,000 Irish rugby fans.
New record label
On December 16, 2006, it was announced on The End Records website that the band had signed on to the label and would be releasing their latest full-length entitled The Arockalypse on March 20, 2007 with three bonus tracks and a DVD release. This same album was released in Finland as The Arockalypse Special Edition.
Tributes
A square in the centre of Rovaniemi, Finland, the home town of the lead singer Mr. Lordi, was renamed after them shortly after their victory at the Eurovision Song Contest. It was part of a redevelopment of Rovaniemi city centre.
Suomen Posti Oyj, the Finnish postal service, issued a Lordi postage stamp in May 2007 in recognition of their Eurovision win. Posti had already released Lordi's Christmas single, "It Snows in Hell" as a special Christmas card edition.
A brand of soda named "Lordi Cola" was named after them and was launched in September 2006, featuring labels designed by Mr Lordi and depicting either one of the individual members or one with the whole band.

Vocal and Instrumental Style
Although Mr. Lordi is always credited with vocals, there are almost always backing vocals. Kita has never sung backing vocals live due to his mask, though he performs and arranges all the backing vocals and most of the voices in the prelude tracks (Scartic Circle Gathering, Threatical Trailer, SCG3 Special Report). On each song, there are five harmonising vocal tracks performed by Kita plus one track for Mr. Lordi's vocals. The other band members only perform the "shouts", for example in "Rock The Hell Outta You" and "Fire in the Hole". Udo Dirkschneider, who guested on the track "They Only Come Out at Night", alternates singing with Mr. Lordi while backing vocals continue as normal. Only in few songs such as "Hard Rock Hallelujah" Awa is singing along with Kita .
Lordi also often have a vocal break in their song to allow Amen to have a guitar riff, normally accompanied by Kita and the bassist (Magnum, Kalma, OX) keeping time softly. After this riff, Mr. Lordi will sing either a short verse (occasionally with a distorted voice) or launch directly into the song's end refrain (always the chorus). The guitar is most often the main instrument.
The keyboardist is most often used as an accompaniment in the band's songs. However, in some songs such as "Icon of Dominance", "Hellbender Turbulence", "Children of the Night", "Magistra Nocte", "It Snows in Hell", "Beast Loose in Paradise", "The Ghosts of the Heceta Head", "Evilyn" and "Rebirth of The Countess" it is the main instrument. "Hate At First Sight", a bonus track on European releases of Deadache features Awa's keyboard throughout and even features a keyboard solo, following Amen's guitar solo.
Kita always plays with a great deal of power, blending very well with the style favored by Amen. The drums are used as changing instruments, using a fast and heavy solo to transition from verse to verse, verse to chorus and chorus to verse. However some songs including "Mr. Killjoy", "Bringing Back the Balls to Rock", "Pet the Destroyer", "Kalmageddon" and "Forsaken Fashion Dolls" and Dingo cover "The House" use the drums as main instrument.
